JBL BassPro SL 8" powered under seat enclosure

Under the seat is the Bass Pro's natural habitat.

The smaller the subwoofer enclosure, the more places it can go. And with cars getting smaller every year, the need for compact powered subs is greater than ever. Now JBL introduces their Bass Pro SL powered sub, and it's ready to go where no sub has gone before.

JBL's Bass Pro SL powered sub delivers impressive bass from a stealthy low-profile enclosure that'll fit under the seat in many vehicles. Its 8" shallow-profile woofer was designed especially for this compact enclosure, so you know you'll be hearing some strong bass.

Tight spots? Sure!

The Bass Pro SL uses a Class D amplifier that delivers 125 watts RMS to the sub; the amp hardly gets warm when it's working, so you don't have to worry about installing the Bass Pro SL under your seat or in some other tight space.

The Bass Pro SL includes line- and speaker-level inputs with an input load switch. The amp's controls also include adjustable crossover frequency and bass boost.

  • powered subwoofer with heavy-duty ABS plastic enclosure

The JBL BassPro SL provides the sound I have come to expect from JBL products. I didn't want a "King Kong Boom Box". I wanted to enhance the bottom end and that is exactly what I got! This device delivers all that I want and need!

I've been quite pleased with the difference this sub woofer has made in the sound quality of my 2004 F-150. This isn't a vehicle shaking device but that's not what I was looking for. It complements my existing (factory) speakers very nicely. I rated this 4 stars for several reasons. First, despite suggestions to the contrary this does not fit under the driver's (or passenger's for that matter) seat where I had originally planned to place it. There was plenty of room under the rear seat which is where I placed it. It appears to be substantial enough to suffer something being placed on top of it which is inevitable given its location. Second, the screws to secure it to the vehicle are not long enough and this required a trip to the hardware store to rectify. Anyone planning to place this under the rear seat in the center of an F150 should be aware it takes every inch of a 20 foot RCA cable and power wires to get to the head unit.

The JBL BassPro SL provides the sound I have come to expect from JBL products. I didn't want a "King Kong Boom Box". I wanted to enhance the bottom end and that is exactly what I got! This device delivers all that I want and need!

Pros: Definitely provides the subtle studio and concert hall bass!

Cons: None, whatsoever!

If you only have a little space and want your sub/amp hidden this is a good option. Does not have alot of power and punch but does add some bass to your system.

Pros: Very slimline

Cons: Not very powerful

)

We have a 2 Wrangler, not a lot of room. Mounted it vertically. Sounds pretty good! Definitely adds that low bass.

Pros: Small size, good sound, easy install, good value

Cons: None

I bought two of these to go under the seat of my late model Crew Cab Silverado and was pleased with the overall quality and presentation from JBL. The sound is pleasant and blends well with their Club model speakers but the output left a little to be desired. There's just not enough head room for me when compared to a separate component setup. I'd recommend this for the person looking to add just a little bottom end and nothing more.

Decent sound, has a slight rattle when listening to music at a higher level.

Was skeptical, but this produces great sound! Highly recommend if you want a sub that's straight forward and not going to wake the neighborhood

The JBL Bass Pro packs a nice tight punch. Base is not overbearing. Perfect for a single cab truck or small car.

Pros: Very clean sound from such a small speaker.

Cons: None

This was the missing piece in my Ford Ranger. Despite its small size it wont quite go under the seat but it will lay just behind it without being in the way. And the bass is large and solid. I didnt want that sloppy bass I hear from some of the kids cars. I saw another review that stated " bass for adults". Couldn't have been said any better. This baby delivers exactly what I was hoping for. I'm 60 years old and listen to blues rock and Rush primarily.

Pros: Small size. Big sound.

Cons: I haven't found any yet.

I have this in my 89 Dodge D150 and it sounds awesome. I would definitely buy this product again. Worth the money.

I was skeptical when purchasing this product. I tried an under the seat subwoofer before (a cheaper variety) and wasn't impressed, but after the first 30 days of owning this JBL, I was sold. It provides a nice "punch" to some already great sounding 6.5 inch door components. I have my head unit's high pass filter set at 63Hz which eliminates any motor boating from the 6.5's, and when combined with this JBL, the sound is pretty awesome. It's not the same as having a pair of 12" subs in the rear of your Tahoe, but I mean if you've graduated from that time of your life and are rocking let's say a Toyota sedan... you need this... you really need this! And the best part is you can enjoy the entire spectrum of sound now... not just the lows. Happy listening!

Pros: -Multiple connection options -Remote AND RCA turn-on options. Good when your remote wire may be loose and you don't want to troubleshoot the problem. -Adjustable bass boost at 45Hz. -Black color is nice and stealthy. It's like the criminals don't even know its there.

Cons: -Considering Crutchfield makes a similar subwoofer for less, it would be nice to see the JBL just a tad bit cheaper.

Excellent quality, solidly built. Going into a pair of these with the right mind set made the experience well worth the money. This sub was the perfect addition to my gear in the 2-door Jeep Wrangler. Space was limited, and the footprint from this sub is minimal. Definitely cured the lacking of low end response in my Jeep's stereo system.

Pros: Small footprint, easy to install. Ideal price for the unit.

My husband loved it.

Adds just the right amount of bass to my sons system in his single cab truck. Like how it tucks away under the seat. No thick box behind the seat so that you can't move your seat back if needed.

Pros: Compact All-in-one (amp and sub) Easy hook up

Cons:

)

Built a locking mount for it, and installed under the bench seat of my jeep. Sounds great, and adds just the right amount of bass I was missing from my amplifier+speakers set-up. Only had it for a week, but I'm very pleased with how easy it was to hook up, tune, and how compact it is. Great sound for a compact 8" powered sub. Clearly this is not going to produce the same rumble as some booming 12" subwoofer, but if you go in with the correct expectations, you will not be disappointed with this model.

Great sound for such a small sub and fits great under the front seat of my Frontier KingCab. Adds the bass I was missing from the JBL speakers and Kenwood head unit. Very pleased with the BassPro SL. Highly recommended if you are just looking to add a moderate amount of bass and have limited space in your car/truck.

Pros: Well made and rugged Small/compact Powerful Easy to tune

Cons: Mounting can be tough but this is not the subs fault

)

If you're looking to rattle the neighbors' windows, this isn't the speaker for you, which should be obvious given its a single 8" sub. If you are just looking to have a nice, solid bass sound to your system, then buy this. It's compact and versatile. I had mine installed under my front passenger seat and it's perfect there. I also had JBL components installed to replace the crappy factory speakers, and they sound great in the Jeep! A small piece of advice: If you want the most out of your system and you're keeping your factory deck, install a crossover. This will allow you more control of your sub and separate it from your mids and highs. The one I bought has a remote knob so I can adjust the base easily for each song.

Pros: Basically plug and go. Great quality brand. Fair price. Versatility with location. Compact. Sounds great. Crutchfield team is awesome to work with!

Cons: None that I've noticed.

I wanted slightly more lower end than I had with the stock door woofers and the JL Audio door speakers. I have a Kenwood head unit and I am driving the JL and stock door woofers with the stock GM amplifier. The JBL is mounted just behind the seats in the hatch area. I am pleased with the additional low frequency spectrum from the JBL.

Pros: Clean lower frequency production Ease of install flexible placement options

Cons: It is clearly not a 10 inch customer sub enclosure with an external amp, but a good value for the investment.

)

Well, I had high hopes for this unit because I currently use a 8" JBL in my hatch with a 150 watt RT202 amp. I wanted to free up some trunk space and be able to still feel some bass without having to turn up the volume very loud. I listen to mostly death metal, so I want to hear and feel the kick drums, but I also don't want to turn the volume up. I was Very disappointed. Even at higher than normal volumes I could not get the thing to "thump". It had loudness, but it sounded horrible muddy and even switching the phase and crossover didn't help (basically I did a drop-in replacement for my current sub, except I had this unit under my seat). My front door polks have as much thump and bass as this unit has, and they are just wired directly to my AVH-4100NEX.

Pros: None

Cons: Poor bass response

JBL is a name brand that I've known and trusted for a while. This compact subwoofer does fill the missing low-frequency spectrum in the music I'm playing. It feels solid and sturdy in it's built. I omitted a star because for the price I was hoping that the remote to control the level is included versus just being optional. I find myself constantly changing the bass level in my car stereo based on the type of music I'm playing so having a remote within reach to decrease the subwoofers volume will be an awesome addition. I had it professionally installed locally and since my stereo system doesn't have a line-level out, the tech used the high-level output for the wiring which also triggers the power. Just to inform everyone that what the tech did was just to connect the right channel of the speaker-level signal so it only represents the mono bass signal which might not be a big-deal but for audiophiles you should insists that both channels be connected. I found out about it when I was switching the balance left-right channels and the left channel doesn't have a bass sound. It's too late now for me since it's a lot of hassle to schedule an appointment just to re-do it but since it sounds good anyway I just let it be. Besides, I know some subwoofers that has a stereo RCA input also just suggests using the white RCA line if there is only one subwoofer signal. I wonder though if those signal is a combined left/right channels.

Features

Mounting: The subwoofer, with its height of 2-7/8", can be mounted flat under a seat in the passenger compartment of many vehicles.

Auto Turn-On: When the speaker level inputs are used, the system can automatically turn on and off by sensing the voltage on the speaker input. If you prefer, auto turn-on can be turned off, so the amp turns on/off using the wired remote terminal.

Note: The auto turn-on feature does not operate when the preamp level inputs are used.

Low-Pass Crossover: The low-pass crossover slope is 12dB/octave and the crossover point is variable from 50 Hz to 120 Hz.

Bass Boost: The amplifier includes a continuously variable bass boost circuit, 0 dB to +9 dB centered at 70Hz.

Inputs:

  • Power: the power (+12V), ground, and remote turn-on connections are on a terminal strip; each screw terminal is approximately 0.34" wide; JBL recommends 12-gauge (minimum) power and ground wires
  • Line Level Input: left and right female RCA preamp level inputs
  • Speaker Level Input: 4-pin port for the included speaker input harness
  • Fuse: 20-amp ATO fuse installed
  • Remote: RJ-14 jack for an optional wired remote (item number 108RBC, sold separately)

Controls:

  • Audio Sense: two position switch; set to On when using speaker level inputs to engage the auto turn-on circuit
  • Input Load: two position switch, active only when using speaker level inputs; offers compatibility with a wide range of aftermarket and factory radios
  • Crossover: rotary control; sets low-pass crossover point; continuously variable from 50 Hz to 120 Hz
  • Phase: two position switch; select normal (0°) or reverse (180°)
  • Level: rotary control; gain variable from 200mV to 2V when using line level inputs, 2V to 20V when using speaker level inputs
  • Bass Boost: rotary control; bass boost level variable from 0dB to +9dB, centered at 70Hz

BassPro SL powered sub

Written by Laura, Advisor, on 11/4/2016 9:40:00 AM
Having more bass in my truck as I drive to work every day just makes Uriah Heep that much better. The JBL BassPro is conveniently sized for my little S10 and does its job well. I'm feeling good about it.

It does not have a remote bass control knob. But you can turn in up on the device if need be. [ Michael Mar 25, 2018 ]
It does mot. I have mine in a 05 GMC ext cab Sierra. The rear set is up 99% of the time and found once I got it set I have not had to adjust. I was not looking for a lot of bass, just to pick it up a little. This unit filled that need. [ David Mar 24, 2018 ]
I believe the remote is optional. I used it in a small truck cabin and found that it was better to get the crossover and amp settings at a comfortable spot and make any further adjustment from the head unit [ Matthew Mar 24, 2018 ]
The bass will travel though out the car . I have one and it sounds great.just make sure it will fit measure it with the measurements they give you in the description. [ Smokey Oct 09, 2017 ]
I have one under my seat in a Sierra. It can be mounted onto a flat service as long as there's ample room. Crutchfield should have the dimensions. I'm guessing it's 2.5 inches thick, give or take. As for Sound. 24 year old me would not have been satisfied with the output. Not by a mile. 44 year old me appreciates it for what it is. A cost effective way to get some gentle bump out of a factory stereo. Hope this helps. As for [ CHRISTOPHER D Oct 02, 2017 ]
I have purchased two of these. One is in the trunk of a car and the other is under the passenger seat of a Jeep. The bass has not been diminished in either location. I am not sure of the Tacoma's layout but cannot see you having any issues with this item. [ DAVID N Oct 02, 2017 ]
Much would depend on the amplification you're using to power the Alpine speakers. The JBL BassPro SL will not overpower any full-range speakers but you should be able to appreciate the better bass response it provides for your system. We recommend using 10 gauge power/ground leads for this sub. I hope that helps. My Bio: [ Ryan Sep 24, 2016 ] Staff
This is for all of the available compact subs, I would recommend to contact an Advisor by phone () or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle, compare the different subs available and give you the details on if they will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle.
