Music to the max

Looking for a new car stereo that simply concentrates on the music? The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X701 CD receiver includes just about everything for people who love superior sound, including crystal-clear aptX® wireless music streaming, a built-in HD Radio tuner, flawless CD playback, and a 13-band equalizer that'll make any sound tweaker drool. The variable color illumination enhances this Kenwood's handsome looks, and gives you some personalization options. And, Kenwood backs up their Excelon receivers with a 2-year warranty.

Let's talk wireless

In addition to hands-free calling with Bluetooth, you can pair your phone with this Kenwood for wireless audio streaming. The receiver offers two options for clear, near-CD-quality music streaming: aptX® for Android phones and other compatible devices, or AAC files for your iPhone®. You can switch between two paired phones without having to go into confusing menus — super handy for vehicles with more than one driver. And if your passengers want control over this receiver from your smartphone, you can simply load Kenwood's free Remote app for them.

HD Radio clarity

HD Radio

The KDC-X701 lets you enjoy HD Radio from participating stations. When you're tuned in, you'll hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static-free. And if you're not in an area with HD Radio stations, don't worry — this Kenwood's sensitive radio tuner will pick up local analog stations, too.

More radio options

Using the controls on the receiver, you can access your favorite Pandora® and iHeartRadio® Internet Radio stations from your iPhone or Android. You can also check out the incredibly deep programming and nationwide coverage offered by satellite radio by adding a .

Aux input and two USB ports

In addition to playing CDs, you can connect a portable music player to the rear aux input, and the two rear-panel USB ports can handle thumb drives loaded with MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, or FLAC music files. You can also play, control, and charge select Android phones, an iPod®, or an iPhone that's plugged into either USB port.

Tone controls and expansion

Use the 13-band equalizer and digital time alignment to adjust your music, so it sounds like you're right in the recording studio with the artists. Kenwood's Drive EQ boosts specific frequencies to help overcome road noise that can drown out your music. The three pairs of RCA preamp outputs send a clean, high-voltage signal to any outboard amps in your system, and you can adjust the audio levels and crossover points for these outputs.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

    Kenwood Excelon KDC-X701 Reviews

    Average Customer Review(s):

    (50 Reviews)

    Looks nice and sounds ok.

    Pros: Bluetooth works great.

Cons: Cannot hook the back lighting up to the cars dimmer system. Cannot turn the display off. The change when using the dimmer that is in the radio is so little it is imperceptible.

This is my second Kenwood to purchase but my first Single DIN unit. Not as easy to operate as a double DIN but I didn't have that option. Also, I'm sure it would be easier to operate if it didn't have so many great features packed into it so I really can't hold that against Kenwood. I love the features and the sound quality is great, especially with the built-in HD receiver. The unit looks great and was easy to install. I'm very pleased!

Pros: Lots of features. HD Radio! It looks and sounds great!

Cons: Larger (and separate) station buttons would be nice. Cycling through the Sources isn't as fast as it should be.

This is a great unit. Easy to set up. I love all the features. Only took me about an hour to set it all up in my 97 Chevy pickup. A GREAT buy for the money.

Cons: IHeartradio no longer supports JVC or Kenwood head units.

    Great service

I love this radio it dose everything I need it to do

Wonderful head unit. This is my 4th Excelon deck and it met all expectations for ease of use and incredible sound quality.

Can't beat it for the price!

Pros: Great unit, nice built in power Easy to install, great features

Cons: A bit to learn to operate

This deck is really great. It's full of everything anybody could need from a top line single DIN head unit. Multiple settings to adjust the sound to exactly how you like it along with a ton of customization options to make it looks just right. My only gripe and the reason why I only gave it 4 stars is that it's very difficult to read in bright light. The shiny finish on the surface makes it reflect anything in the car.

Pros: All the bells and whistles Powerful Very customizable

Cons: Hard to read in bright light.

Great product so far. I've been wanting Bluetooth media and hands free calling for quite some time now. Every time I drive my wife's vehicle I get spoiled. Cus then I go back to mine and all I have are basic functions. The only real thing I'm hung up on is it won't start playing automatically when connected to my android devices using Google Play Music. I have looked through all the settings and everything seems to be correct. I haven't tried other integrated apps, like pandora and IHeart, to see if they do or not. It could very well just be Google Play Music that doesn't allow for it. The other minor bug is that sometimes the Bluetooth cuts out. It doesn't do it all the time, just sporadically and it's literally less than a second. I know other users have mentioned this bug as well and that maybe a firmware update to the deck may fix it. I haven't dug too deep into researching it.

Pros: Powerful 3 x 5v pre-amp outputs 2x Fast Charge USB ports Hands Free Calling (includes mic) & multiple Bluetooth device connection App Integration Pro-like EQ Settings

Cons: Bluetooth skips occasionally (possible firmware update) Doesn't auto-play music from all devices & apps

Great sound and customizable to your whatever you want it to sound like. Loaded with features. No USB port up front, but two usb cables from rear with about a foot of extension. Aux connection in rear as well. I really like the Pandora integration, As well as Bluetooth audio and iPod integration. The only thing that I disliked was that there is no dimmer integration with the car lights. There is a dimmer load that you have to manually press for it to turn on. Other than that it is a solid quality car stereo and I am very happy with it.

Pros: iPhone integration, Pandora radio integration, Bluetooth audio and calling. CD sound quality. Easy installation.

Cons: No dimmer wire for integration with car lights. Manual dimmer button.

Excellent unit, installed it in my son's 2003 F150. It has great sound, and functionality. I would buy this unit again.

    More that I hoped for!

Very nice head unit, with a lot of great features. This is my second eXcelon unit, and I've been very happy.

Pros: Feature packed, 5v pre outs. Great connectivity.

Cons: This model compared to my KDC-X994 is a bit more "cluttered" in appearance, and the remote doesn't allow access to some settings.

radio has a good tuner in it. But buttons are kind of hard to find while driving down road in my rough riding truck. I usually just use remote. Haven't had any issues with Bluetooth like some other people were. But you can tell when radio switches from analog to digital. Overall good radio and I'd buy it again.

It's great!! Quality is wonderful. I would recommend this to anyone. Thanks

Pros: Quality is great!! Features are awesome

    Cons: None

So far I think it is a very nice stereo. I'm not using the amp, so I can't rate that. The tuner sounds good so far. I'd like to recommend flashing the firmware to anyone who has this. Before the update the stereo shuffled the same few songs over and over. After the update it shuffles the entire USB drive when "all random" is selected. It seems like it has many controls for as deep as you want to get into customizing it. I'm still learning all the features but so far I like it a lot. As with most electronics nowadays, the manual sucks.

Pros: Many Controls. Pretty Lights. Easy to use. Accepts many sources and formats.

Cons: You should update the firmware when you get it.

Install was super simple in my vehicle (1990 Toyota 4runner). Performs flawlessly. Love the dual rear USB.

Pros: Installed directly into factory bracket (did not need cage). Great audio features. Great display features. Great remote.

Cons: Not really a Con, just wish remote would allow power on. Though not well documented, the remote will allow entry into song search mode by pressing the "up arrow", then using the "up arrow" or "down arrow" to traverse the song list and "Ent" to select the song. Similarly, the remote will allow entry into folder search mode by pressing the "up arrow" immediately followed by pressing the "return" arrow. Use "up" and "down" to traverse folders, "Ent" to select folder, then select son

Great radio. Only downside is having to learn a new system. Upgraded from a 10yr old after market. Great sound quality and broad eq spectrum.

--pros-- In terms of audio quality and options, it's great. the radio comes in really good for an aftermarket radio, but it's really obvious when it switches in and out of digital. I love the rear USB and AUX ports. the buttons are big for a single din, and feel really good compared to other aftermarket radios, and it even remembers radio presets after disconnecting the battery. I like that the audio controls button says "audio" unlike the currant trend of "BASS BOOST". --cons-- my main problems with it are the fact that it has the good ol crappy aftermarket display problem. I don't understand what was wrong with standard LCD displays, where the letters turned up black and the background was colored, not this back words way of doing it. This makes it really hard to read in sunlight compared to my factory radio, which was easy to read in pretty much any conditions. The back light is also very uneven. it's a lot brighter by the "source" button than it is by the back button, and the line below the radio buttons seems to be styled to be brightest by the "2" button, but it also affects the button back lights too, which is a stupid design call imo. it also just seems to flashy, I don't need all this extra stuff screaming "look at me!". The last thing that is annoying is the lack of a dimmer wire, it relies you setting a time for the dimmer to turn on and off. It seems really cheap to me not to include such basic functionality. sti

Pros: radio works great holds preset buttons after battery disconnect no "bass boost" nonsense volume knob works good, way better than my pioneer buttons are big(ish) and satisfying(ish) still way better than a slow touch screen.

Cons: classic "aftermarket radio screen that you can't read" problem uneven and flashy lighting no dimmer wire

I guess I'll be the third person to point out the Bluetooth skipping issues. Skips during playback and acts as if it's going out of range when playing from backseat. Being sent a replacement, hopefully it's just a few bad units that made circulation.

    Cons: Bluetooth issues

Poor sound quality, but I am not sure if is my Axxcel amp or Rockford Fosgage speakers. Functionality is Ok. Preset buttons so small! Why?

Great little unit that is easy to navigate and use. The unit didn't work well with a Samsung S8 when wired, but works fine when just using Bluetooth. I really like having a volume know as opposed to buttons as I can quickly adjust volume without multiple button pushes. Hoping a firmware update comes out that enables better connectivity with the S8.

Pros: Great unit with lots of features Unlimited back light colors

Cons: The app that is installed in the Samsung S8 is pretty useless and wired connections suffer because of it

i`ve been a kenwood loyalist my whole life, have many home and auto stereos, and this new one hasn't disappointed!

Love it so far! Has all the features I wanted at an affordable price. The Bluetooth mic is worthless (I drive a Jeep Wrangler), but that's to be expected with my rig.

Pros: Lots of features at an affordable price. Easy to navigate

Cons: Didn't come with any case or bag to protect the faceplate when off.

This unit replaces an older Kenwood KDC-MP238 which made the install much easier. The old unit utilized an outboard phone blue tooth module and an external satellite receiver. Because I also used an external CD changer, I had to utilize a switching unit as the unit only had one DIN input. Since this unit has the phone blue tooth built in and will not control the CD changer, I have only have the satellite unit so I was able to get rid of a lot of external units under the seats and a lot of wires. I use an external Audio Control EQS equalizer supplying L, R, and sub outs to two Kenwood amps (one 4 channel 360 watt amp for the 4 corners and one 2 channel 300 watt per channel bridged into 600 for the sub.) so the dedicated sub out on this unit is appreciated. I don't use most of the sources available when you scroll through making you have to scroll through what you don't want to get to what you do want. Some can be deleted but not everything. You should be able to delete anything you don't use. I agree with other posts, the display is too dim in bright daylight. My last "CON" is that the phone blue tooth apparently download phonebook info from the paired phone. My old unit did. It would display the name associated with the number for incoming and out going calls. This unit does not nor does it display just the number. Unless I am doing something wrong this a huge CON for me. The response of the unit to inputs from the remote also seems sl

Pros: Easy install, Blue Tooth Phone very clear, like the third set of outputs for the sub

Cons: Day display too dim. unused source options some can't be deleted, no remote disc changer control

Great sound in my truck. Easy set up. Hands free calls are clear.

Well the first head unit had no sound but display. Crutchfield sent out a new 1 right away that why I have it 3 stars. haven't had time to install the new 1 yet. Looks great clean unit hope sound works with the new 1 or I'll just go with Alpine.

    Pros: Look great

    Cons: Will see

Love this receiver - i know it has a lot of features that i will most likely never use, but what i've tinkered with it does great... Hands free phone calls - GREAT... listening to books and music off my I Phone - Fabulous via USB or Bluetooth. the installation in to my 2002 Mini Cooper worked very well with the install kit from Crutchfield all the wires were a bit intimidating at first - but once i laid it all out and watched a video or two it was fine. Again - Radio is great - even if you don't use all the fancy bits ;)

Pros: wow that is a lot of settings!

Blutooth skipping made this unbearable, I had it replaced still did the same thing even with 2 different phones and a firmware update. Even bench testing it with the battery it was still skipping. Be cautious of 2017 models like this one. Kenwood says they haven't heard of anything like this but yet their xdc-998 has even worth blutooth that's their flagship model .

    Pros: Great look and sound

    Cons: Blutooth skipping

    Awesome head unit,easy to navigate

    Works perfectly. Installed easy too

Pros: Great sound ease of install

    Cons: None

Great product, only problem is it doesn't read the memory stick unless I take it out and plug it back in.

    Pros: Good sounds

    Cons: Memory stick problem

I have been using Kenwood auto audio products for many years now and this upgrade for me to this unit is most satisfying. The audio parameter adjustments are great, the versatility is more than I need and the sound is awesome ! I bought this unit for the 6 volt outputs and with the components I have installed in my vehicle it lights the speakers up !

    Pros: Easy install, clean look

I am partial to Kenwood Excelon Head Units, but my last one was a dud after a year. Took a chance on this model and have been loving it so far. The wiring harness was changed so no plug and play from older units. The functionality layout was also changed which is actually easier to learn than the Kenwood Excelon units of old. Bluetooth phone calling has been improved greatly. The features, functionality, and sound quality are excellent. Can't say much about the remote since I don't really use it much. The remote does work well though. I highly recommend this unit if you are looking for single DIN.

Pros: Sound Quality, Bluetooth Calling, and Features

    Cons: None So Far

Awesome radio.... looks good, sounds good, and has all the features that I wanted. What holds it back from a 5-star rating is the awful remote control. I guess Sony spoiled me with the remote that came with my last car stereo (Sony GT630UI). That remote was so much easier to use. With the Kenwood remote, it is much less obvious to tell by feel if you've picked it up upside down or right-side up. And when attempting to press button "1" for preset station #1, it is all too easy to accidentally press the *AM button and switch to the AM band. I find that I always have to look at the remote before pressing the preset button that I want. Volume buttons are small and do not stand out as they should. Hopefully I will get used to it, but for now it is just frustrating.

Pros: Nice display (looks good) Sounds good Lots of sound customization options RDS Hands-free calling

Cons: Layout of remote control buttons

Excellent receiver for a great price. Many specific equalizer options to a level not found on most other receivers. The Excelon line is a bit higher on the build and audio quality then standard Kenwood line. I specifically bought it for the AptX high-quality bluetooth streaming from my Android phone. It has 2 USB ports in the rear that I ran through the storage box holes on my Metra faceplate adapter...one iPod and one micro USB so I can charge anything in the pocket there. I ran the hands-free phone mic up near my rear-view mirror, and it works great. My only complaint about this is that like many receivers, the LED lights are nearly invisible during a bright sunny day...you'd think someone would have figured this out by now. Also slightly annoying that phone calls turn the bottom half of the lighting to green by default with no option to adjust that, but not a big deal. I'm just super picky that all of my nighttime lighting is always all red for minimum night-vision loss, but the green isn't bad, and again, that's only during a phone call and then it reverts back to my full-red mode. Oh, well except for the super bright white Bluetooth indicator icon. That is the only thing I can't adjust the color on, but that one tiny indicator is not a huge deal for me especially since it's a neutral color. I'm going to put a piece of tint sticker over it to tone it down a notch. I think this is the best receiver out there for the money and no useless gimmicks. Buy it

This is one great system. It has more than I thought. It was installed in a 1993 Chevrolet C3500 Crew Cab and with the up graded speakers, and I ma not running an Amp. Thanks to the support staff at Crutchfield, I am learning all kinds of new stuff this system will do.

    Pros: ALL.

    Cons: NONE.

Great product!!! Clean!!!!!! I have pioneer speakers and amp because they were the brand that had the best product for my truck (93c2500) but when it came to the head I was tempted to go pioneer to match the whole system I couldn't do it. Take Kenwood was just way cleaner cosmetically and electronically more elegant and appealing. The final nail in the coffin for decision is loyalty!!! My first car (92 Buick lesabre) stereo purchase was a kenwood Excelon I just had to keep the tradition up

Pros: Very Clean, does the job and than some!!!

    Cons: None

The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X701 is a wonderful unit for most user. The functions are friendly to use even for a beginner. It has multi-color screens so the user will not be bore. The sound produces by the unit without the help from an amp is great. The HD receives great sound without interference. The only thing I want from it is screen saver with cool images that you can download from Kenwood's website. I had an older unit that have the feature.

I love this KENWOOD KDC-X701 !!...I would HIGHLY recommend this over the Sony 620 BT or the new model one since this has more features. Also the sound is AMAZING with stock speakers. It sounds like there are subs in my SUV, but it all comes from the powerful Kenwood receiver. Bluetooth and Hd radio work great and I love the color combinations as well. Drive EQ is a sick feature that other ones don't have !!...It has soo much to offer for under $200 !!...5 stars all the way. Only con would be that it does take some time to get used to it since it's loaded with features. Not really a big deal to me, but that would be my con. Definetely a MUST have if your looking for an excellent receiver !!

    Pros: Everything I mentioned above

Cons: It takes time to get used to all the features on it

It was able to receive more radio stations especially the HD stations when compared to the Sony deck of similar price. I was able to pair my cell phone easily and make clear phone calls. The radio's built in power amplifier is strong enough to drive the rear 6x9 speakers by Pioneer.

Pros: Pulls in radio stations especially HD channels.

Cons: Face plate buttons are not as easy to push compared to Sony receivers

This radio was easy to install and it seems to work well (I have only had it for three days). The Bluetooth features work great and I have been able to pair up 4 Samsung devices, Two Note 4's (mine and my wife's), a Note 2 for music and my Galaxy Tab S2 Tablet, they all seem to work fine which is why I bought the radio. Saying that, this radio has a few things I don't like. First - When playing music from a USB Thumb drive you cant play random songs from different folders, so you are stuck at 999 songs for one folder, the 8 year old Alpine I replaced was able to random all folders or a single folder. Second - The antenna stays up when the reciver is in BT Mode, USB mode and Aux mode, It should only stay up when I am on radio mode, that is the way my old Alpine worked. Third - The radio supports FLAC, I tested that, but it does not support Apple Lossless, none of my Apple Lossless files would play, the Kenwood KDC-X701 only supports m4a 8-320 kbps / Variable Bit Rate, which is stupid since there are no limitations on WMA and FLAC files. I am currently re burning my vast CD collection to FLAC, but it would have been nice to use Apple lossless. The display brightness, which has been an issue on older Kenwood receivers seems to be bright enough for me on this model.

Pros: Easy to install Sounds Good Bluetooth seems to work well so far

Cons: When playing music from a USB Thumb drive you cant play random songs from different folders, so you are stuck at 999 songs from one folder, the 8 year old Alpine I replaced was able to random all folders or a single folder Second - The antenna stays up when the radio is in BT Mode, USB mode and Aux mode, It should only stay up when I am on radio mode, that is the way my old Alpine worked. Does not support True Apple Lossless, only FLAC and WMA Lossless files.

I love this stereo! Having been an installer in the past I knew what to expect from this Kenwood product. This stereo really cleaned up the sound a lot. Keep in mind the radio I replaced was no slouch either. It was an old school Pioneer Premiere higher end unit from the mid 2000's. The 5 volt preouts on this Kenwood made a huge difference in audio quality compared to the Pioneers 4 volts. The Bluetooth audio unit in this device is one of if not the cleanest I have heard. Thank you Crutchfield for always having amazing deals that allowed me the luxury of owning this stereo.

Pros: 5 volt preouts, very clean Bluetooth audio, easy to use, very versatile stereo.

Cons: Only cons is that it didn't have a deep enough red to match my car's lighting or a white setting either.

Excellent head unit. The kdc-x701 excelon is flawless. The cd player has an excellent sound quality to it. The hd radio is also has a excellent reception as well. Just like the kdc-x501 but with hd you will not be disappointed.

Pros: Everything that you would want. 5-volt head unit with 24-bit dac. I truly only listen to cds.

    Cons: Not one

I love this head unit! The rear USB ports are great and Bluetooth quality is really good as well. One of my favorite things about the head unit is the screen, it is right and easy to read in the sunlight.

Pros: Screen, Bluetooth quality, eq settings

Cons: A little pricey but you get what you pay for

I've only been able to listen to this CD player just a few times, but so far, it's an excellent stereo. There is a clarity difference between what I had, Alpine, and this new Kenwood. There are many EQ controls that I have not tried. If you want a CD player that you want many EQ controls, this is it.

Pros: Not much to complain about.

Cons: Volume knob needs some grip.

No. It is not a power on/off button like OEM stereos. This device has no power on/off nor does it seem to have a mute button. The closest you can come to turning it "off" is to change the source (SRC button near to upper left of volume) to "Standby". Pressing the volume knob on this system has two actions it can trigger. If you are not in a special mode, such as adjusting the EQ, it brings you into a function menu where you can do things like select display color and set the clock. If the system is in a special mode where you need to select things, pressing the volume knob causes the select action. [ Scott Dec 01, 2017 ]
I'm sorry but no, muting only happens with the remote control [ carlos Nov 28, 2017 ]
I am not sure if the actual volume button on the unit operates this way, I use the remote for muting. I can assure you or anyone else that is curious, I have had several lower end Kenwood head units and this is is by far the best ! [ Terry Nov 28, 2017 ]
No. Its a toggle for zone and color. Etc. [ Ryan M. Nov 28, 2017 ]
No. Pressing the volume button accesses the function menu. [ Jchambers254 Nov 28, 2017 ]
No, there is a mute button. Dont buy this radio, it has several flaws. I regret buying this radio after owning it for several months. [ Dave S Nov 28, 2017 ]
The reset button should be behind the face. I've never used it, not sure if it's a factory reset. [ belinda Jun 23, 2017 ]
Iv used the same setup with 64gig stick(all gig sticks are FAT32) and works great maby the songs on the stick aren't labeled correctly [ katie May 09, 2017 ]
I'm not sure if you can enter direct file names per USB used, but each device (USB 1, USB 2, Auxiliary etc...) can be renamed to you preference. For example, I named my auxiliary port "IPOD" because it stays plugged in at all times. [ Mark May 08, 2017 ]
In addition to only having 999 folders, you can only have 999 files in each folder. Also, I have not found a way to be able to have music randomly play from multiple folders, only the same folder. [ Dave S Apr 30, 2017 ]
The Kenwood will recognize up to 999 folders and up to 20,480 total files. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps. My Bio: / [ Ryan Apr 20, 2017 ] Staff

Whon ever said it cuts in and out is just jealous of the cd deck you just purchased. I have never had any issues with my HD Radio. Who ever said or told you that doesn't now anything about kenwood excelon audio... and or about how great Crutchfield is! Get the deck if you don't like it you have 60 days for no reason to return it... but I wouldn't return this deck if my life depend on it. The bluetother in it self is worth it. It has aptx... there are not very many products out there that offer that. I did alot of research before I bought this deck. I have had a lot of different kenwood decks... and amplifers. There decks and cd players are some of the greatest producta I have seen for the price. [ JUSTIN Mar 18, 2017 ]
We are actually trying to figure the same thing out. It does cut in and out of HD. [ Kathleen Mar 17, 2017 ]
